A Morning Song

from The Temple Hymnal by The Unseen Temple

/

about

A song that may well have been performed each morning by some members of the group, as the title suggests. Its slightly twee feel has led Karen Thomas to doubt the suggestion that it was composed by Acre himself. Nonetheless it must be considered an important piece if it was performed so regularly. The snake mentioned in the lyrics probably refers to the cult’s leader, who apparently had an affinity with the creatures. There is clearly an acceptance of the inevitability of death here and an emphasis on making the most of the time we are given. In the case of the devotees, this clearly meant following the teachings of Acre to the letter.

lyrics

In the morning there’s a guide
The snake has risen, he’s not hard to find
In the morning there’s a song
We sing together because we don’t have long

Before the Raven comes
To each and every one

In the morning there’s a sign
Reminding us of our duty – to raise up our lives
In the morning there’s a cross
Showing us love and the fear we lost

‘Cause when the Raven comes
He comes to everyone

We’ve got our smiles on in the backwoods
We don’t have much
We don’t have long
But we have a morning song

We’ve got our smiles on in the backwoods
