This song is the only example with a known composer. In a moment of levity during what was a fairly bleak period for the group, Christopher K. Jones (the guitarist in Acre’s band at the time) penned this ditty. Acre apparently approved of the song to the extent that he had it typed for inclusion in the hymnal. It was a reaction to the police and media speculation that Hazel Malloy, a runaway teen, could have been living on the site.
The line concerning the raven’s wings may be a reference to the Winter Ritual as we have similar allusions in Faraday’s collection of three of Acre’s journals which were smuggled out of the complex by a disaffected member in 2001.
Jones was a fan of sixties British groups and, according to one account, was sometimes uncomfortable with the improvised psychedelic jams Acre would lead, especially in the early days of The Temple Band. Nonetheless he remains on the House site and is described as a jovial figure who often gave light relief to Acre’s darker moments.
lyrics
No! We don’t have Hazel we don’t
Plenty of waifs and strays
Came here to get away but
No! We don’t have Hazel we don’t
Plenty of other girls
Watched the Raven’s wings unfurl but
No! We don’t have Hazel we don’t
And despite what they might say
We ain’t goin’ away
